Before anything else: if it hums but will not turn, it is probably jammed rather than dead. Press the reset button on the underside, then work the hex wrench into the socket at the bottom of the unit and turn it back and forth to free the plate. That clears the large majority of "my disposal died" cases, at any age, and costs nothing.
If it is genuinely failed, the age matters — but it points somewhere different than it would on a large appliance. Disposals last 8 to 15 years, averaging about 10, and they are among the cheapest appliances in the house to replace outright. That tips the repair-versus-replace maths toward replacement far earlier than it does anywhere else: a repair that would be obviously worth paying on a refrigerator is usually not worth paying on a disposal, simply because a whole new unit costs so little.

One failure is decisive at any age: water leaking from the body of the unit rather than from a connection or a hose. A leaking body seam cannot be repaired, and it means the grinding chamber has corroded through. Slower or louder grinding developing over months, and odour that survives cleaning, point the same way — internal corrosion — and both mean replacement rather than a fix.
Jams from bones and fibrous scraps dominate the first four years and clear with the reset and wrench. Splash-guard wear and slow drainage in years 5 to 8 are cheap parts. From year 9 it is chamber corrosion and body leaks, and from year 13 motor bearings and start capacitors — the point at which a new unit is the sensible answer.

There are no blades in there
Despite the universal fear of them, disposals contain no knives. Two blunt impellers swing outward as the plate spins and fling waste against a stationary grind ring, which does the actual work. Nothing in the chamber is sharp.
