What are the signs of a dying furnace?

Any one of these on a furnace past 15 means it is time to plan the replacement:

  • Frequent repairs — two service calls in two years, or a repair quote that keeps climbing.
  • Uneven heating — rooms that used to be comfortable now need the thermostat cranked, and it still is not even.
  • Rising gas bill with no rate change — an aging furnace burns more fuel for the same heat.
  • Noises — grinding, banging, or a persistent rattle points at the blower motor or a loose heat-exchanger panel.
  • Odors — a musty or burning smell that survives a filter change and a cleaning.
  • A yellow burner flame instead of crisp blue — incomplete combustion, and a reason to have the heat exchanger checked now.
  • Short-cycling — firing and shutting off every few minutes.
  • More dust or soot around the vents than usual.

Should a 25-year-old furnace be replaced?

Yes, proactively. A 25-year-old furnace is a decade past its design life, probably running at 65–75% efficiency against 95%+ for a new one, and its heat exchanger has been through 25 winters of expansion and contraction. Even if it is heating today, the failure mode you are waiting for is a crack that vents carbon monoxide — which forces an immediate shutdown mid-winter. Replace it in the fall on your own schedule. How do I find out how old my furnace is?

The rating plate, usually inside the blower compartment or on the outside of the cabinet. Many furnaces print the manufacture date in plain text ("MFG DATE 09/2013"). If not, the date is coded into the serial number — the format is brand-specific:

  • Goodman, Amana, Daikin — the first four digits are the year then the month (`2205…` = May 2022).
  • Carrier, Bryant, Payne — the first two digits are the week, the next two the year (`3216…` = week 32 of 2016), on units built since 2000.
  • Lennox — a two-digit plant code, then the two-digit year, then a letter for the month (`1606B…` = February 2006).
  • Trane, American Standard — units since 2010 start with the two-digit year, then the week (`1204…` = week 4 of 2012).
  • York, Luxaire, Coleman — since 2004, characters 2 and 4 together are the year and character 3 is a letter for the month (`N0D6653823` = April 2006).

How to make a furnace last longer

  • Book the annual service — before the heating season, so a worn part is caught in October rather than January.
  • Change the filter on a schedule, not when you remember — airflow is the single biggest lever on heat-exchanger life. The right size and MERV rating matters too; a too-restrictive filter starves the blower.
  • Keep the return and supply vents clear — furniture over a return register makes the furnace fight for air.
  • Fix a short-cycling furnace promptly — it is either a filter, a flame sensor, or an oversizing problem, and all three shorten the unit's life while you ignore them.
  • Seal obvious duct leaks — a furnace heating the attic through a split duct runs longer for less comfort.
