Is central air cheaper than window units?

It narrows fast once you cool a whole house. Cooling a typical home takes three to four large window units, so the purchase is closer to $600-$2,800 than to $200 — and you buy them again every 8-10 years, where central air runs 15-20. What the choice really means

The difference that outlasts the cost comparison

Central air is a permanent improvement. It is fixed to the house, it transfers with the sale, and it appears in the listing as a feature buyers filter for. A window unit is personal property — it leaves when you do, and in a listing photo it more often reads as evidence that the house has no central air.

That matters because it changes what the money buys. Spending $6,500 on central air is partly a purchase and partly an improvement to the house; spending $1,100 on four window units is entirely a purchase, and in eight to ten years you spend it again. Neither is wrong — but if you are weighing the two on cost alone, the cost comparison is not capturing all of it.

The practical version: the shorter you plan to stay, and the fewer rooms you need to cool, the more window units make sense. The longer you are staying and the more of the house you are cooling, the more central air is the one that keeps paying you back.

A BTU is how much heat the unit can move out of the room in an hour. Bigger room, bigger number. But as the quote above says, bigger is not simply better: an oversized unit cools the air so fast that it shuts off before it has pulled the moisture out, and you end up with a room that is cold and clammy. Size it to the room, not above it.
